(500) days of summer.

this past week i had the privilege of FINALLY going to see (500) days of summer. i had to travel to chicago to view this movie because only a few theaters in wisconsin were showing it and none of them were close to me (go figure, living in a corn field has its perks but, unfortunately, awesome movies nearby is not one of them!).

i went into this movie thinking it was going to be some sweet, sappy love story, until the narrator immediately informed me otherwise. i knew right then that i was going to hate the ending but i still needed to see it anyways (not only because i drove to chicago to see it, but because i spent 10 dollars on the movie ticket and four dollars on my candy). warning: do not read further if you plan on seeing this movie because i am going to ruin it for you; so stop here because i don't want to feel bad. also, since you have stopped reading here and you wont read my final statement, i'll make it right here, SEE THIS MOVIE...its definitely one of the best of the year and even though the ending wasn't ideal for me, it's still worth it. the soundtrack is quality too.

(check out this trailer!)

tom is stuck in a boring job, writing greeting cards after he went to school for architecture. he lives a life thats an every day routine that he hates but he has to pay the bills so he's stuck. he believs in fate and true love and soulmates and is convinced that summer, the new assistant in his office, is his. summer grew up feeling like soulmates don't exist and that love is a waste of time because most people get divorced anyways. there is nothing extraordinary about summer but tom is convinced that she is the one for him. this movie goes back and forth through the days (1, to 45, to 11, to 59, to 20, to 100, to 30, to 159, etc..., and those are guesses, give me a break i couldn't remember the specific days!).

tom and summer become increasingly closer but she will never say that he is her boyfriend. after a few hundred days of being together, it ends. they go their separate ways and tom is more than heartbroken. they reconnect sometime later at a co-workers wedding and become close again, and summer invites tom over to a party she is having at her apartment. tom has great expectations of them rekindling their relationship, only to find out that it is summers engagement party that she so kindly invited him to. tom runs away and is again, left heartbroken. tom is shown a few scenes later sitting at his favorite place in new york city (a park bench overlooking a part of the city) and summer appears behind him and they end up having a conversation. tom questions her about why she couldn't commit to having a boyfriend but now had a husband. they have a nice little chat and part ways.

after all of this, tom is now convinced that there is no fate, soulmates do not exist and things do not happen for a reason. he's pretty sure of this until he meets a pretty girl, coincidentally named autumn, at a job interview. and then the movie ends.

i was totally disappointed in the ending. tom and summer were meant to be together if you ask me. i also believe in fate and soulmates. my life also closely resembles that of tom and i really wanted him to win. if there is hope for him, there is hope for me!
